Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) involves TLT-Babcock Inc. generating a computerized model of a fan or system which can be analyzed for aerodynamic design issues. Velocity distributions and pressure losses can be identified and optimized. Modeling can be used to verify impact of proposed system modifications for any anticipated service conditions.

Structural Failures

Structural problems can take the form of cracks in stationary or rotating steel, sheared shafts or damaged couplings and bearings. TLT-Babcock uses both classic engineering analysis and finite element analysis to assess components and determine their static and dynamic responses to mechanical, thermal and flow induced loads. This may include field testing, in-house analysis, and post-modification testing to ensure that your problem has been solved.

Abrasion or Corrosion Failures

Gas handling equipment is often exposed to abrasive and corrosive environments that, if unchecked, will result in wear that can compromise structural integrity. Analysis can be done to assess the impact of abrasion and corrosion on the residual fatigue life of the part. Improved materials or coatings can be recommended to extend mean time between failures.

Excessive Power Consumption

Fans and blowers represent significant parasitic load in utility and industrial processes. Often this equipment is sized conservatively or energy losses for the equipment the fans serve are estimated conservatively. The result can be an oversized fan operating efficienctly. TLT-Babcock can assess ductwork systems and can often propose changes to optimize energy losses and improve efficiency. Testing can include shop model testing and field testing to AMCA or ASME PTC standards as required.

Excessive Vibration

Rotating equipment generates synchronous forces that can result in unacceptable system or equipment vibration levels. Similarly, fluid flow can generate random or periodic pulsations that may interact with ductwork structures. TLT-Babcock can conduct operational deflection testing, impact testing, unbalanced response testing, and foundation testing to assess and recommend solutions to correct problems.

Reverse Engineering Services

Where drawings are unavailable, and functionally duplicate parts are needed, TLT-Babcock, Inc. offers complete capability to scan your existing parts (any OEM), capture that part’s precise dimensional data, then produce CAD models that are accurate representations of the original. 3D precision scanning technology, production and process knowledge and quality control monitoring throughout the process.
